Greetings!

Welcome to the March issue of The Cole Center for Healing's monthly newsletter. This newsletter will keep you up-to-date on the latest therapies we offer, new Lecture dates, and anything new that is happening at The Cole Center for Healing.

This month's newsletter features information regarding heavy metal toxicity. The most common metals enter the body in food, water, skin absorption and through the air we breathe.

    Everyone who lives in civilized society is exposed to toxic amounts of heavy metal. Heavy Metal toxicity is usually acute or chronic. Acute exposure involves a sudden exposure to a large amount of toxic metal. An example of acute exposure would include industrial accidents or chemical spills. Typically, acute exposure is easy to identify and easy to diagnose. Heavy Metal toxicity from chronic exposure is more elusive. The symptoms are varied, and may disguise themselves as other diseases. Chronic exposure involves repeated or continuous exposure, over time, to lower levels of toxins. The metals most likely to be found at toxic levels in the human body are mercury, lead, aluminum, cadmium and arsenic. They enter the body in food and water, through the air, and even absorption through the skin. The sources of these toxins are too numerous to list. Some of the common exposures to toxic metal include car and truck exhaust, tobacco smoke, tap water, "silver" dental fillings, vaccines, fertilizers, and insecticides. The problem occurs when the body cannot process these toxic metals. The body is faced with two choices when exposed to a toxin: eliminate it, or keep it. If it cannot be excreted, the toxin is bound to various tissues, causing toxin build up in the soft tissue.

    Mercury - toxic and radioactive?

    Mercury is considered the most toxic non-radioactive element on earth. It is also one of the most common toxins found in the body. It affects most of the body's organs and functions, and almost any symptom can be a result. Mercury from industrial waste can pollute water sources. People and animals absorb mercury from drinking water polluted with mercury. Vegetables and grains will absorb mercury if they are watered from mercury polluted water sources. Fish, such as salmon, living in mercury- polluted waters, can be contaminated with mercury as well. Organic mercury found in fungicides used to treat food and feed grain can potentially transmit metal through animals and cereal foods. Any filling in the mouth that looked silver when it was new and is now gray or black is about 50% mercury, combined with other metals such as zinc, silver, copper and tin.

    On average, amalgam fillings weigh one gram, and contain one half gram of mercury. The typical adult has ten amalgam fillings containing five grams of mercury. (One half gram of mercury in a ten acre lake would cause officials to issue a fishing advisory for the lake.) Mercury escapes from fillings in the form of vapor created from chewing. These vapors enter the bloodstream to be delivered to all parts of the body.

    So you may be asking, why do dentists use mercury for fillings if they know it is bad for you?

    According to the American Dental Association website, the FDI World Dental Federation and the World Health Organization consensus statement issued in late 1997 on dental amalgam: "No controlled studies have been published demonstrating systemic adverse effects from amalgam restorations." However, this is not true, as many studies have been conducted on this issue. There are many books on this topic, including Silver Dental Fillings: The Toxic Time Bomb, Uninformed Consent, Elements of Danger, and Toxic Metal Syndrome. Also, listen to Dr. Cole's Interview with Dr. Boyd Haley on this topic.

    How do you know if you are suffering from heavy metal toxicity?

    There are several ways to test for heavy metal toxicity:

    • Review of symptoms;
    • Autonomic Response Testing (ART);
    • Tissue Mineral Analysis (Hair Analysis);
    • Blood Testing and Urine Provocation Testing.

    Autonomic Response Testing (ART) is used most frequently.

    ART is a form of "muscle testing" which measures the response of the nervous system to an agent using the resonance phenomenon. That is, we are matching the frequency of one agent to another (i.e., the frequency of mercury to your body). If there is a match, then you have problems with that agent. ART is a noninvasive way of evaluating the body's imbalances and assessing its needs. It involves testing the body's responses when applying slight pressure to a large muscle. This provides information on energy blockages (physical and energetic), the functioning of the organs, and toxins, among other things. It can also be used to test the body's responses to herbs and other remedies. Muscle testing is an excellent diagnostic tool because it can identify issues before they manifest as symptoms, or before results are shown in blood or tissue testing.

    If testing identifies heavy metal toxicity, smoking should be stopped. A typical heavy metal detox program starts with the removal of silver amalgams. Consider using a biological dentist, who will follow a specific protocol to reduce your exposure to mercury vapor when removing amalgams. Once the amalgams have been safely removed, an IV and oral supplement program removes the toxic metal from the soft tissues. Color and sound therapy may be used in conjunction with the IV and supplement program to expedite the process.

    Flushing heavy metals

    Mobilization and excretion are required for heavy metal detoxification. Supplements work in conjunction with the IV treatment to flush heavy metal toxins from the cells and remove them from the body. Without the proper detoxification protocol, heavy metals may just redistribute in the body, instead of being removed. Some of the supplements used in heavy metal detox include:

    Fundamental Sulphur II contains Molybdenum and Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), which are helpful for protection against heavy metals in general and specifically useful in mercury toxicity. Garlic has similar properties. Anti-Mutagens contain N-acetyl-cystiene, which enhances the body's ability to excrete mercury Chlorella facilitates heavy metal removal, primarily through the stool Alfalfa increases one's fiber intake. This reduces the uptake of heavy metals in the intestines Cilantro also helps mobilize heavy metals.

    The DMPS IV contains DMSO (Dimethyl sulfoxide). DMSO crosses the blood- brain barrier, and is an excellent agent to help transport other substances throughout the body. DMPS binds with mercury and removes it from the body. Glutathione and Vitamin C are antioxidants, and also bind with mercury.

    The length of treatment varies, depending on the patient's level of toxicity, the frequency of treatment, as well as how the patient responds to treatment. Mercury toxicity may be resolved in as little as six to nine months for the first phase. This is then followed by a phase using the Homeopathic medications. Often patients also have problems with other heavy metals, such as cadmium and lead. These patients may require a longer and more intense detoxing program.
