Greetings!

Welcome to the April issue of The Cole Center for Healing's monthly newsletter. This newsletter will keep you up-to-date on the latest therapies we offer, new Lecture dates, and anything new that is happening at The Cole Center for Healing.

This month's newsletter features information regarding cancer. Some 35 years of intense and growing efforts to improve the treatment of cancer have not had much overall effect on the most fundamental measure of clinical outcome - death

What causes cancer? For the last 25 years, the consensus in the scientific community was that cancer was largely a genetic disease, regulated by a small number of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. Scientists have since disproved this theory but are at a loss at replacing it with a new theory. We are able to link exposure to certain environmental factors to the diagnosis of cancer: ionizing radiation, smoking, pesticides, electromagnetic fields, etc. But exposure is not a guarantee of cancer. The question still remains: What causes cancer?

How Close Are We To The Cure?

And since we were wrong about the cause, how close are we to the cure? Some 35 years of intense and growing efforts to improve the treatment of cancer have not had much overall effect on the most fundamental measure of clinical outcome - death. There is no solid tumor incurable in 1976 that is curable today. Perhaps our failure to cure is a reflection on the quality of our current tools. The FDA defines an "effective" drug as one that achieves a 50% or more reduction in tumor size for 28 days. Chemotherapy is ineffective in 96-98% of all cancers, and typically decreases the quality of life. The best objective study of chemotherapy concluded that it is ineffective. (Dr. Ulrich Abel, Univ. of Heidelberg.) The war on cancer is a failure and chemotherapy is not getting very far with the vast majority of cancers. (Scientific American, Cairns 1985)

About 20% of Americans die from cancer, and half of those deaths are due to cancer of the lung, breast, and colon-rectum. Despite advances in screening and treatment of colon cancer in the US, no benefit in survival has occurred. And cancer is not an American disease. The number of brain tumor cases in Europe (as well as in the US) has increased about 40% in the past 20 years. Exposure to cell phones, computers, and other electromagnetic fields are thought to be the cause. The World Health Organization expects that the worldwide cancer rate will increase by 50% by the year 2020.

    The Bottom Line

Cancer treatment costs about $100 billion annually, and the effort to control cancer has failed so far to obtain its objectives. (New England Journal of Medicine, Bailer and Smith, 1986). It is a marvelous opportunity for rampant deceit. Dr. Lundberg, former editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association, states that there is so much money to be made that ethical principles can be overrun sometimes in a stampede to get at physicians and prescribers.

    So Where Is The Hope?

The hope evolves from cutting edge research around the true cause of cancer. It starts with a lesson on the evolution of the human cell. For as long as cells have been alive, they have required a means to produce energy. The earliest cells did not require oxygen to function. Most cells have adapted over time to the point where they require oxygen to be present in order for the cell to create energy. Mitochondria, found in each cell, are the sites of this aerobic (oxygen) respiration. This aerobic respiration produces most of the cell's energy in the form of Adenine Triphosphate (ATP). Since ATP cannot be stored, the mitochondria produce an incredible amount of ATP every day. There are over 1,000 mitochondria in the average human cell. These mitochondria possess a greater number of genes than exist in the cell nucleus. Yet the mitochondrial DNA possess nothing to protect their DNA, as well as no effective repair mechanisms for their genes. Genetic damage to the mitochondria has a major impact on how the cell functions, and is difficult to repair.

Remember, each cell holds the genetic code to function aerobically and anaerobically. Cells with damaged mitochondrial DNA switch back to functioning anaerobically. Cancer can only exist and spread in a non-oxygenated environment. Mitochondrial diseases can affect any organ in the body and at any age, and the diseases are characteristically complex in nature, severely debilitating, and often fatal. Mitochondrial dysfunction is found in diseases as diverse as cancer, infertility, diabetes, heart diseases, blindness, deafness, kidney disease, liver disease, stroke, and migraine. Mitochondrial dysfunction is also involved in aging and neuro-degenerative diseases such as Parkinson and Alzheimer dementia. They can be inherited from either parent, though it is often the mother who passes it along. They can also be sporadic or induced by the environment. Some of the known causes of chronic mitochondrial damage include reduced glutathione production resulting from liver damage, and reduced oxygen transport in cells because of oxidation that exceeds the reductive capacity of glutathione. This comes about because of the strongly oxidizing effect of antibiotics, insecticides, heavy metals and chemicals.

    The Cellular Restoration Program

So how do we address the mitochondrial damage? European physicians, led by Dr. Heinrich Kremer, are achieving success with an approach that involves removing toxins from the body and restoring function to the mitochondria. Dr. Cole has been to Europe and trained with Dr. Kremer and the leading physicians in this approach, and has developed the Cellular Restoration Program. Supplements are used to reduce free radicals in the body and restore cellular health. At the same time, oxygen therapies are used to eliminate the low oxygen conditions of the tissues. Other therapies and supplements are used to restore normal energy production. All of these therapies work synergistically to support the body and restore health. The end result is that body's normal environment is restored, and the cancer cells are destroyed or revert back to normal. Using this approach, Dr. Kremer has reported success rates in excess of 90%, and without the side effects of standard therapy.
